For the past fifteen years, as an independent filmmaker, Nia Malika Dixon has shepherded many projects in film, TV, and media, as well as crafted her own novels, anthologies of poetry, short stories, and blogs. A natural-born storyteller, Nia has a talent for taking audiences on an enthralling journey anywhere, from the grimy, crime life of a Baltimore drug dealer struggling with his spirituality, to the sunny, disillusioned life of a homeless man in Venice Beach, CA.
An educator for over twenty-five years, and now a professional writer-director, Nia first broke into film and tv in 2006. Receiving consistent positive feedback on her writing, Nia was excited to have her content praised by executives in Hollywood. However, because her main characters are never straight, white, males, the caveat from the approving executives was always the same: “Does she have to be Black?” or “Does she have to be a Muslim?” and often, “Does she have to be a woman?”
Nia decided to stay true to the authentic narratives that she creates, and greenlight her own projects. Nia shot her first independent film in 2006. She has since created films, series, and other content for over ten years.
